Dr. Aristeidis Katsanos

Aristeidis obtained his Medical Degree from the University of Ioannina, School of Medicine, Ioannina, Greece in July 2011, and completed his training in Neurology (2014-2018) at the University of Ioannina and at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, Athens, Greece. During the years 2011-2015 he completed his PhD thesis at the Department of Neurology, University of Ioannina, investigating the contribution of transesophageal echocardiography in the diagnostic work-up of patients with stroke.
After the completion of his PhD thesis and training in Neurology he was granted a 6-month European Academy of Neurology Research Fellowship at the Ruhr University of Bochum, Germany to investigate the utility of transorbital sonography in patients with optic neuritis. On July 1st 2019 he commenced a stroke fellowship in the Division of Neurology at McMaster University. He was appointed as an Investigator in the Brain Health and Stroke Program at the Population Health Research Institute as of December 9th, 2020 and Assistant Professor at the Department of Medicine (Neurology), McMaster University, Hamilton, ON, Canada as of October 1, 2021. His research focuses on neurosonology and the evidence-based evaluation of novel therapies in acute stroke treatment and secondary stroke prevention.
Aristeidis has actively participated in numerous research projects and international collaborations, and has published more than 270 papers in high-impact medical journals to date (>8000 citations, H- index 53). He is the (Co-)PI for ongoing randomized clinical trials, including CoVasc-ICH (NCT05159219) and DETECT (NCT04484350), and he is leading several observational studies. As a principal applicant he has secured over 3 million Canadian dollars from public sources for his active research projects. He has served as an external consultant for research grants for the National Insittutes of Health (USA), Health Research Board (Republic of Ireland), the Netherlands Organisation for Health Research and Development, the French National Research Agency and as a peer-reviewer for over 170 medical journals. He has been the recipient of the New Investigator Award from the Heart & Stroke Foundation Canada, the EJ Moran Campbell Award from the Department of Medicine, McMaster University, the Young Investigator Award from the European Stroke Organisation (ESO), the Outstanding Reviewer Award from Stroke (the official Journal of the American Heart Association/ American Stroke Association) twice and an award from Web of Science-Clarivate analytics for placing in the top 1% of reviewers in 2018 in Neuroscience and Behavior on the Publons Global Reviewer Database.
He serves as an Assistant Editor for Stroke, Academic Editor for PLoS One, Associate Editor for Frontiers in Neurology (“Section Stroke”), and Editorial Board member for several Journals. He serves as a member of the Guidelines Committee of the ESO and member of the Digital Content Committee of the Canadian Stroke Consortium.
